Tips and Hints
General Study Tips
Spelling: Study the spelling word list for the story unit. We will have one Spelling test for each Reading story that we cover in class. Be on the lookout for the Spelling test days! Three bonus words will be included on our tests!
Reading: Our Reading series covers many fiction and non-fiction stories. Be on the lookout for vocabulary to go with each story we read! Our quizzes will be open book~but students will need to remember the vocabulary definitions on their own. Unit tests will cover the reading, spelling, and vocabulary skills taught throughout the unit.
English: Study the unit from the textbook and homework assignments. Tests will be at the end of each unit.
Math: Study the chapter from the book, notes taken in class, and homework assignments.
Science: Study the vocabulary words, homework assignments, study guides, notes and textbook chapter. Tests will be at the end of each chapter.
Social Studies: Mrs. Burton teaches Social Studies to our class! You may contact her by email at [email protected] or by phone at 239-0000 ext. 3712.
The KEY to great study skills!
1. Set up a specific place for homework. A desk or kitchen table is great-they will need somewhere to spread out!
2. Set up a specific time for homework. After school, after dinner, whatever works best for your family-but stick to it. Making homework a regular part of your routine will be most helpful. Even if there are not written assignments, the time could be used to study for future tests.
3. Avoid distractions! TVs should be turned off and phone calls avoided during this time.
4. Let the students do their work on their own. They may come to adults for clarification, but they need to LEARN to do their work on their own.
5. Ask to see graded homework assignments to learn where they're having trouble and where they're doing well.
6. Praise your child often for working hard and for doing well!!
